Here we go on the derail... Real quick.  VRO (OMC) mixes the oil with the gas in the fuel pump, hence the people that say they lost # (whatever) cylinder to loss of lubrication and blame the VRO unit are mostly off base, more likely they had a leaned out carb.  Now Yamaha (I know from experience) has direct injection in each cylinder, better ? Who knows, both are good if maintained

on carb motors or EFI (not direct injected)  the fuel is mixed before the carbs.   The fuel air mixture is drawn through the lower end of the engine before being drawn into the cylinders.  This lubes the bearings etc.  Direct injection two stroke engines are a different animal and each make is a little different.   Like Marc said people who blame a bad cylinder on the VRO are wrong.  If the VRO failed the entire engine would be toast.

Thanks wingtime.  The only thing is, I followed the hoses that go to each carb from the oil tank and they enter the manifold after the carbs, so my assumption is that the oil somehow gets mixed after the gas has already passed through the carbs?  Seabob is right, if this gets too drawn out, someone might have to make it into a new thread.

Sorry, but I have to disagree concerning "oil is oil"
Look at it this way-oil has to pass a test to be qualified at TCW3. If we assign a number to
passing the test, lets say 65, then if an oil scores a 66 is is certified as meeting TCW3 requirements.
So a cheap house brand might score a 66, and they are good to go. However, a name brand, like
Merc Quicksilver or Yama lube might score a 95, and they are also certified TCW3.
Which would you rather have in your very expensive motor-the cheap oil that just makes it, or the
more expensive oil that far exceeds the requirements?
I for one have never scrimped on any type of oil for any of my engines.
Reminds me of when I owned a tire shop, and people would come in and ask for the cheapest tire I had.
I would remind them that as they are traveling down the road in 3,000 pounds of vehicle with their family
doing 60 mph, the only thing between them and mother earth is a half inch of rubber and some compressed
air, and then ask them if they still wanted the cheapest I had. Everybody then upgraded to the better quality
tires.
Tight lines,
Charlie D.
