Scupper question 161 Tournament
« on: June 02, 2012, 03:38:01 PM »
I just received duck bill scuppers I ordered in an effort to correct a water getting in the boat problem. Poor design with this boat. Scuppers are below water line when I am in the boat and the floor of the boat is very low. Any way some one told me to try these Duck Bill scuppers and they did not come with installation instructions. They will be comming out the sides of my boat. My question is should I install them vertical or horizontal to the water line? My guess would be horrizontal to the water line.

Thanks for any input
Gary

Hi Gary,
I've never seen these before

and don't know how they work.
Now that we know what they look like can you explain how they're supposed to work?

Well Rick, you and I both know how duckbills work, I just simply can't remember how 161 had her cockpit drains set up. I know the 23 Cat has (2) 2" drains in each aft corner in the cockpit sole in molded-in drain channels, but the were pretty standard 90s running to t/hulls on the hullside...

What we DO know is that the skinny end of the duckbill has to be oriented towards the hullside t/hull.  I don't believe orientation is a concern, vertical, horizontal, whatever.  For instance, head pumps (manual or electric) have duckbills to prevent waste from coming back in the toidy.  Orientation is not an issue...

There is a scupper on both sides of the hull aft. The problem is on the 161 they are at and below the water line. The deck of the boat is also very low. There is a drain from the floor connected to the scupper by a hose. I tryed installing a check valve in line between the drain and the scupper to try to help stop water from comming back into the boat but it did not work. There  is no pump to drain the water from the boat drain, just gravity. I did install ball valves in line and that works great until a wave breaks over the bow and there is water in the boat. If I open the valves and put the boat in gear the water drains right out. The problem is when I stop water comes in.

My question is when I mount the Duck bills should the flat bill be horizontal with the water line or vertical. I think horizontal  but I am not sure. I dont even know if they are going to solve the problem but its worth a try.

Gary, read my above reply...orientation is not an issue...

In other words, it doesn't matter.  Water does not align it self to attack in the vertical, horizontal, or sideways mode.  So just install them and report back on your findings... :thumleft:  :thumleft:
