Yamaha 300 HPDI
« on: April 21, 2013, 05:20:21 AM »
Good morning guys,

I have a question for the Yami heads. I gave my neighbors 1995 Merc 2.5 the last rights the other night so he started to look for a newer used engine. He is looking at a Yamaha 2005 300 hpdi. What is the scoop on this engine? I started reading various forums and came up with mixed reviews. The main issues seemed to be high oil consumption and some typical early DFI issues similar to Opti's and Etecs during the initial product launch. I'm a little out of my league with being able to guide him with this purchase so if you fellows have any experience with this design I would appreciate the feedback.

Thanks,
Farley

Farley, have the hours and run profile checked via a laptop, it would be worth the little bit of money.  The HPDIs do seem to use a little more oil, guess that's just the way they have the oil injection rod adjusted.  I have the 250 and after I got my fuel cleanliness issues resolved, I haven't had an issue with it.  Mine has almost 900 hours now on it.  They do not like bad fuel... VST filter, high pressure filter and the basket filters on the hp pump should probably be changed, tons of good reading on THT on the HPDI, rockin and reelin on THT has a great post on the filters.  Of course the usual checks, compression lower unit stuff, but I wouldn't be afraid of it at all.

Thanks Marc,

I don't have any info on the engine yet except that's it in Palm Beach and the guy is asking $5800.00 so I'll see what I can find out. So far all I have found out is that if the last four digits of the serial numbers are 2884 or greater, it has all of the upgrades separate from the maintenance items you described.
