Replacing cooler seat in 1986 Osprey 200
« on: July 03, 2012, 12:23:00 AM »
The cooler seat has cracked in a number of places. I've been pondering the idea of replacing it with a fiberglass structure that would be bolted to the deck and have access so it could be used for storage. I don't even know what that would be called. If such a thing is available, it would allow me to either retain the bench cushion or replace it with two individual seats that could possibly swivel. At the risk of offending those readers who think I shouldn't change from a classic style, has anyone done this? What would that structure be called (hard to Google without knowing a name for it) and where would one find it? Thanks.

You can get a replacement cooler/seat with upholstery that is very similar to the classic Aquasport look on eBay now:

Here is what the original helm "seats" looked like.  It is a primitive cooler with a drain hole in the bottom.  I use it for dry storage - just add a piece of ply covered with a cushion when I take it out.

One option might be a "swingback cooler seat". My 175 Osprey has one and I use it mostly for dry storage. It is nice as you can sit facing aft. Leaning posts are great for driving, but I guess I'm getting older and like sitting down when I get the chance. Downside is that the "cooler" portion is fixed and if you use it as a cooler, you need transfer from your other portable cooler. Mine has a gap underneath so I can hose down the deck without trapping water.

Lots of options for $250-$500.

I think this one might have a base similar to your existing.
