1983 250XF Re-Build
« on: April 16, 2012, 12:27:18 PM »
While re-furbishing my 1983 250XF, I have noticed that the overall thickness of the fiberglass on the sides of the hull and everything above the rub rail is noticibly thin.  The bottom, floor and transom are solid, but I'm curious why everything else is thinner than one would expect. Is this typical or do I have an oddball? Have any of you seen this before? Any input would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Long Shot

Yup they are thin... you can see day light thru them in places when inside the boat! LOL.   The decks, cabin top, walkarounds etc will have a wood core in them.  The rest will be about 1/4-3/8" of just glass.  The reason is it is not structural.  The boat is kind of like an egg...  very weak in some spots but when the whole structure is together it is very strong.  It's lasted 29 years so far so I wouldn't worry about it.

Owned an 84 CCP. The 250 CCP is your hull with the XF cap. Banged on both (and several others) during my ownership days and they felt the same.
Wing's engineering take on the hulls is sound and so are they. I've banged mine during use so hard that all manner of devices flew off but the hull never missed a beat. IMHO I'd be more worried about ethanol fuel and trailer bearings. I always had much more problems with them. Never worried much about hull integrity.

Good luck with the rebuild.
