2000 Johnson 150hp Trim/Tilt Question

The trim and tilt work fine when using the buttons. However, when I go into reverse, the engine pulls/kicks up. Thus when I lay off the throttle, the engine comes back down.
My mechanic seems to think the main piston for the Trim/Tilt has a break away pin that is broken. Anyone know what he is talking about?
I tried to figure out what part he is talking about per this parts page:

That pin is typically called a "shear pin", designed to give way before something major absorbs the force. But, in the diagram you linked to, I see nothing matching that description...

Make sure your manual release valve is fully closed and it is full of fluid and system bled. More than likely this is a piece of debris holding open a check valve. I had an older 200 Johnson that would do the same thing and also leaked down when sitting. One day while running a narrow creek I clobbered a sunk cabbage palm; didn't break anything and fixed the powertrim issues! I concluded that whatever trash was in the valve it sucked or blew its way clear.

I don't see a sheer pin. I have seen them on smaller motors. I think the check valve theory is on the right track. Try calling Suncoast Marine in Largo. They are a BRP parts dealer and they do service too. They seem very knowledgeable and might be able to help you out.

Same issue with an old Mercruiser out drive.. I found a little booger under the ball check on the pump. Once the booger was removed the drive stayed where it was trimmed.. Also had issues with a stripped manual relief on a 96 Merc 70. The engine would more or less not behave well at all when the trim was used because the needle on the manual relief would not stay closed. Bummer was, to change that relief the mount had to get split in half and that was a party all by itself..

I have come to the conclusion that I am screwed but with a problem that is not an immediate requirement.
I have a good expense coming up on the boat and don't want to prolong it any further. So, until things get worse, I will just be careful about reversing and how fast/hot I come in to anywhere.

Check to see if your manual release valve is closed. I was just reading my service manual and it says
"The manual release valve must be closed to reactivate the motor's shock absorption system and reverse thrust capability"
.
I believe the valve is accessed thru a hole in the port side transom bracket with a screw driver.
