clean-up rub rail

Started to clean-up rub rail.
Sanded with 220 than 400 & it started to turn a dark red?
Anyone else seen this?

Its bleedin man! Go with 800 then 1000 to start. Lewis can walk you thru it.

Red?  Not sure what to tell you. Which color rail do you have? I did have some sandpaper (220 dry) that when I sanded the gel it would leave a red stain. I quit using it and no more problems. Is the red coming from the rail itself?

The rail is black
Seems like it was the red was coming of the rail
Tried a few diff sandpapers
What were starting with 220?

it could possibly be the oxidation causing the color change in the surface of the material, if its not the paper.  Are you usinig any liquid other than water to sand?

Tried it dry & wet
The dry was real bad with 220.
The rail is pretty weathered so not sure if it will clean up or not?
