1972 19-6 Starting the rebuild!
« on: December 25, 2011, 03:31:38 PM »
Picked this boat up a month ago, have been looking for about a yr.Was wanting a 22-2 but I think this boat will work out well, here's the plan-  Removed old deck + casting platform.Removed stringer system (they were shot) foam was in pretty good shape though. Removed liner. Previous owner filled in transom w/ no cap, will be adding a 12" cap w/ a nice crown. Building a new stringer/rib system (planning on plywood box beams glassed over w/ biax). Spraying new foam wherever I can. I know the weight issue w/ the box beams, but I always overbuild, would rather be seaworthy then light + lively. Building up entire hull w/ extra glass. Raising up new deck a few inches, eliminating casting deck. Building under-deck watertight compartments. Will have two 2" scuppers in transom. Planning on a bracket w/ somewhere's around 140hp. Let me know your opinon's. For now its back to grinding down the old glass.

Hull looks in good shape from what we can see.
So the PO "poured" the transom?

Hey Rick-  No I think he filled the cut out w/ plywood + glassed both sides, actually did a pretty good job but didn't finish top to well. Was thinking of laminating another pc. of plywood to inside of transom, glassing the whole thing, then adding a 12" cap w/ a nice crown. Hope to do that soon, will post pics as I go.

The back cap looks great, that's what I'm shooting for. How do you like your Armstrong bracket? How heavy are they?

Thanks!  I love the Armstrong bracket.  Can't remember what it weighs, installed it over ten years ago. If I had to guess, I'd say 80 lbs. or less.

I really like the real fiberglass hatch. You resisted the low cost plastic option. How do you handle the water drainage from the recessed lip or does it just drain into the bilge? This is exactly what I want to do with mine when the rebuild time comes. No plastic hatches!

The hatch does not have a drip rail. Any water that does hit that area would drain into the bilge. Has never been a problem, the only time there is water back there is when I'm done catching bait and I clean it up with a 5 gallon bucket.

Fitz you are so right about plastic hatches, they simply do not last when used on a deck and stepped on.
I built all my hatches. They have drain channels, the back two are hooked together and drain right out of the transom. the front two are hooked together and drain out the side by the original drain.
