2001 Aquasport cat 161 info needed
« on: October 31, 2011, 09:06:55 PM »
Just purchased this boat and trying to find any information I can. Looking for the fuse/power block, I know it sounds silly but I cannot find it. It is a small boat with a 90HP 4 stroke Honda. I did not receive a boat manual it. I also find the throttle takes almost two hands to move it. I looked for a friction screw could not locate any, took it a part don't see anything obivious. Any help would be appreciated. Also new to the forum, live near Pensacola FL.
Thanks
Bruce

Bruce,
You have a rare and unusual Aquasport.  I used to build her big sister, the 230 Tournament Cat.  I can certainly tell you where the fuse box was on her!  But that doesn't help you.

Look in the starboard transom area, but search under the helm as well.  I take it you have a switch panel protected by breakers?

As far as your throttle stiffness, well, that's really not going to change with an adjustment to the throttle friction screw, which should be on the top of the binnacle, port side aft.  Honda Binnacles are very simalar to Yam and Zuke.  The adjustment typically prevents throttle creep.  It sounds more like you need new cables.  Some might say check your cables for tight bends or obstructions, etc., but they didn't move, in reality, from when they were first installed.

Just saying...

But enjoy the little girl!  The 90 should push her damn well! :thumleft:

EDIT: You beat me to the punch again Bob... Same Aqua Time, Same Aqua Channel

Welcome aboard Bruce, :salut:  I'm in Pensacola, where are you located?  There is probably not any central fuse block, normally you will have a negative (ground) bus under the console, and also in the stern located inside near the batteries.  There should be some type of small box, with maybe a fuse or two, or a CB to control and protect the bilge pump, and a few other items, on our older models that is also located in the stern area.  All other circuits on the boat that are switched should be protected by an associated CB next to the switch that controls that device, IE: lights, bilge, livewell, accessories etc... As far as the controls, it sounds like new control cables are in order, since you eliminated the binnacle control as a problem, try disconnecting them from the engine, and try moving them, you will probably find they are just as stiff when disconnected.  Good to have a neighbor up this way.

Alright Marc, cue the "Twilight Zone" theme... :salut:

And Bruce, should new cables be in order, go to boatersland.com, check out the Teleflex 3300 XTremes...http://www.boatersland.com/enginesystem ... 3300x.html

I've dealt with them countless number of times, excellent price and service...and no, I don't work for them!

Thanks for all the info and great welcome. I will take your advise with the cables.  As the boat is confirgered the fuel tank is under the helm and takes all the space availible so I could not find any power/fuse/cb panel. But I will continue to check everything out.  Got it in the garage taking my time playing and making everything correct. I live in Pace FL. retired USAF.

We'll have to get together on a decent weekend, and put the boats in for a cruise. (retired Navy) Check your PM's, sent you a message.

My name is Gary, I purchased a 2000 161 this summer and am really happy with it. I live in Maryland and boat in the northern part of the Cheasapeak Bay. I have been in 3ft. seas and the boat gets right on top and runs flat and smooth. It is also very stable. 3 people on the same  side of the boat and it hardly leans. It takes some time getting use to as far as the way it handels on turns, It is flat on turns and cannot turn sharp. Very wide turns. IT DOES HOW EVER STOP VERY FAST AND IT JUMPS RIGHT UP ON PLAIN. Mine has a 90HP 2 stroke Johnson on it. It is very heavy for its size 2000 lbs without the motor. It is not as fast as I would have liked. Top speed is 34 with one person in it and I cruise at 25 at 4400 RPMs. I get about 4 MPG at best but it has very good range with a 24 gal. tank.
The scuppers are a bad design, They are below water line when I am in the boat and not moving. If you dont have check valves between scuppers and the floor drain water will come into the floor of the boat when stopped.  You may want to check that. I also added a bilge pump in the small center section in the rear of the hull. Mine has a live bait well that is a great feature but it does allow water into that center hull section.
Well thats enough info for now, Let me konw how yours performs, top speed and fuel econamy.
One more thing I found was getting the boat centered right when pulling it out of the water can be tricky. I made a small modification to the trailer by adding a half moon piece of treated wood to the bottom back of the guide boards. Worked out real well.  My E-mail is dandy89@verizon.net

How about some pics of that boat?  We all love boat porn, and your boat is one that is not often seen.  So take some pics and post them on the site!
