1992 Johnson silver star 175hp idle
« on: August 01, 2011, 01:44:58 PM »
Hey guys. Been reading some threads on a problem that happens w/ these motors and need some help. I have the above mentioned motor and when i am transitioning in between gears, or just idling (approx 1100rpm), the motor will sputter and stall. Also, I don't know if it is just slack in my shifter cable but it is becoming difficult to find neutral. So once the boat stalls and i am coasting, I have to find neutral before I can restart which can be an issue. Is there an idle adjustment necessary? If so, where is it on this motor. Please help!!!!!!!!!

Not sure what other issues are agoing on, but 1100 is way high for an idle speed, you will trash your lower unit eventually if engaging at that RPM, you might have some carb issues, that a carb/s overhaul would solve.  Timing is also involved in the setting of the idle speed and off idle.

I have the same motor, only a 91. You could have wear in the shifter control box. Their like any thing else . They will wear. But like has already been said. 1100 rpm’s is to high for idle. I had the same problem. Couldn’t keep it running at idle. Rebuilt the bottom two carbs which had water and dirt in them and problem went away. The other four where clean but I did clean them anyway. Think about it. Then look at your gas lines, as they come from your pump to the fuel rails. The lowest spot in the rails, goes to your bottom carbs. Sooooo all the junk that gets through your filter. Drops to the bottom two carbs. So they clog up first. Motor will still run at higher rpm’s. Till they clog all together. Also you have to change the filter in the motor just before the pump as well as the needle valve in the vapor separator. That sits just after the filter.:thumright:
