suggestions on swim platform for 1973 19'6
« on: July 05, 2011, 09:49:12 AM »
anyone have suggestions on a curtain type of platform for the old aquasports?
id prefer something nice and simple to blend in with the boat and it needs to be a easy one to use as some of my crew arent as flexible as they used to be.
pics would be great too!

If you wish to post on the site then you need to read and follow the second link but as they say...
The first one's free.

This is my WAC with tabs. The mounting has been adjusted (platform mounted before tabs) to clear the actuator. Not the easiest type to ingress and egress. Also boarding ladder is mounted on top to clear tab making sitting on platform not very comfortable.

My suggestion would be stainless frame/teak surface with a flip-down step.  West Marine has both the teak and the fiberglas versions.

The teak requires a little more upkeep, but perhaps more suitable to the 'era'.  (IMHO).
However, you could buy the stainless/fiberglas version and Awlgrip (paint) the platform to match your hull color.

Nothing is easy, is it?

been looking at the teak platforms. i think i might go this route and just let the teak weather... i like the look of it all grey.
i want to mount it as close to the waters surface as possible and it seems i might have to cut the swim platform around the trim tab actuator to allow for this.
not sure if thatll be a good idea. will keep everyone posted over the next couple weeks.

I have a Detmar swim single step ladder.  It is a white plastic with stainless railings.  It is new in an old box.  I bought it for my AS when rebuilding, but went a different route.  Make me an offer.  It is located in Lakeland.  But I am in Bradenton and Stuart a good bit.

A buddy of mine refurbed an old 25' Mako.  He had an all-stainless boarding platform custom made, with SS 'rungs' instead of wood.  Surprisingly it wasn't that much more expensive than a store-bought one.  (Well...50% more but it's clearly better)  The advantages were that it (a) was designed around his tab actuator, and (b) the 'flip-down' section was a little longer, so easier to get your foot up to it.  It looks very nice.

That boat was sold but let me try to describe it:

The "frame" was round material (1" I think).  The brakets were on top, and curved to function as handles, wide enough to allow fro the flip-down to fit between.  The "rungs" (I don't kinow if they're rungs but the parts you stand on) were an oblong profile...probably 2" across and 1" deep, flat side up...so you weren't standing on a round tube...close together so plenty of flat surface. But if I made one today, I'd probably use some sort of flat material inside the tubular 'frame" instead of the oblong tubing.   Added some black non-skid strips later.

When I saw before he mounted it, I thought, "Man, that thing is pretty long...will stick out the back pretty far."   But on the boat, it was great...not cramped to stand on and the added depth allowed for a longer "flip down" step, so the step hung down deeper for boarding.
