I keep hearing of some older Aquasports with delaminated stringers.  Has anyone hears seen or heard of this??

Years ago there was an Aquasport at the boat yard where we were that had delaminated stringers but don't know much more than that.  As I was not yet an AS nut I didn't inquire further.  It may be an infrequent problem because I don't recall reading on any of the posts here of any boats having the problem.  Mostly, and perhaps universally, the older boats have soaked foam in the stringers.

Thanks Jim. What is the best way to tell if the stringers are waterlogged? I dont see any access to the stringer area. I might be able to cut a access thru the I/o hole liner. They linner the crap out of this boat. The i/o transom has a linner against it along with the pannal that trims the aft cockpit. I dont have the boat in the yard yet as I am picking it up this weekend.

When I rebuilt my transom I also had to attach the stringers in the stern area of the boat. They were no longer attached from the transom to about 3 feet forward. I feel this was due to the flex in the rotted transom. My boat is a 1983 222 CCP! It had a very hard life before I bought it. There are some pictures posted in the Photo Gallery from last summer showing the stringers during my rebuild.

As to how to get access to check the stringers. I could access mine through the deck plates next to the live well. I must admit they seemed fine when I checked them there. It was not until I cut the stern area out of the boat that the problem showed it's ugly self!

If your deck and transom are solid, I would not be concerned about wet foam in the stringers. All it will do is add extra weight to the boat. To remove it you will have to cut the deck out and get involved in a major rebuild!

If you decide to do a rebuild, there are alot of people on this forum that will be glad to give advice! Most of the time it is good advice!

I have often wonder about having water soaked core material in a composite structure such as an Aquasport stringer. If it were to freeze, I would think that the expansion would cause progressive delaminations and material cracks?

have you heard of problems w/transom caps coming apart?  I had this happen on my 222 and now on my 196 FF.   Suggestions on repair?
