Evinrude 115 Trim problems
« on: June 26, 2011, 10:06:58 PM »
Hey guys
I have a 1983 Evinrude 115 and I am having a problem with the tilt and trim. The trim motor works and will raise and lower the engine but when I raise the motor the trim starts but will not turn off the trim motor will run in the up position and will not stop so I have to turn the battery off. I was out last weekend and I had to be towed in b.c The engine wouldnt lower into the water. I have tried replacing the trim switch and Im not sure what else to do. Do I need to buy a whole new trim system or motor?
Thanks for your help
JP

Sounds like some sticky relays.  In the rear top of an older Evinrude there is a black box. Open that and you'll see a few relays - all trim and tilt relays.  You can jumper them there to test them and then order new ones for the sticky ones.

Yep, relays or a bad trim switch. I had water get into a trim switch once; came home from fishing, started to rinse the boat off, went inside to get a cold drink, came out and the engine had trimmed itself all the up and just grunting the trim motor. I couldn't touch the trim motor because it was so hot. I couldn't believe the trim motor lived through it!

just an FYI:
for those of you that own an older ford truck '86-96, the fuel pump and head light relays under the hood are the same # as the jonnyrude trim/tilt relays.  :salut:
