Steering problem
« on: July 01, 2011, 09:53:45 PM »
I just purchased a 1996 Aquasport 175 Osprey center console, with an 88 Evinrude.  On my maiden voyage, the steering wheel was very hard to turn.  Is there a grease fitting or a piston that may be mking it hard to turn.

Any ideas??

Hi Bob, more than likely the steering cable.  Try to narrow it down: You can pull the cable out of the tube on the motor (may not be easy) and then see if the motor manually moves easily.  That will rule that part out and there are grease fittings on the engine for the steering and tilting.
Then see if the steering is still hard.  If it is, you can then remove the cable from the back of the steering mechanism (not hard to do) - see if the wheel turns easily.  If it does, then it's the cable.
