Welcome aboard Shannon. :salut:

Safe planing depth?  Draft for your craft is shown at 26" with the engine down.

Max rpm I would think for that motor is 4500-5500. I always lean toward the higher number but do not exceed it.

LOA- 17' 5"
Beam - 6' 9''
Draft - see above, 7.5" with the motor up.
Bridge Clearance 4'-7"
Dry Weight 1510 lbs.
Fuel Cap. - 35 gal US
Max Power Rating - 120hp
Transom Height - 20"
Deadrise - 12 degrees

Good luck.

I just joined this string....  So here's my delimma...  Just bought 1995 175 with a Johnson 88 SPL on it in May.  It is in great shape and ran well.  Compression checked out fine.  Well she laid down on me over the Memorial Day weekend.  After weeks in the shop, I got the bad news yesterday.....  Rings gone on starboard side.  Now I'm faced with Re-build a 16 yr old motor ($4500-5000) or Re-power with a new motor (9,000-11,000).  This is a painful decision.  I'm leaning toward a new 90 Evinrude E-Tec.  Anybody have a thought out there?  The 88 pushed this boat fine, but a friend suggested moving up to the 115.  I'm not sure the 1995 was built for this size and weight and I'm not sure I want to pay the extra $2000 for a few more HP's....

If it were me (remember that) I would op for the new motor and at 90hp. The new e-tec will push that small hull just fine.
On the other hand, the 115/120 will really make it fly but......

If you were made of money,
1. You'd own a different hull.
2. You wouldn't be asking if the motor would push it OK but rather how BIG can I fit on the back.

Point is, economy is a big factor to boaters and why, if it's important to you, would you let someone else spend your money?

If you can afford it, get the 90.

Hi, welcome ritchie!

We don't know where you live, but would assume you're near the water...why not ck. some of the local repair shops/dealers or Craigs for a decent used 90?

A 2 stroke 3 cyl. Yammie 90 comes to mind...or a 90 Tohatsu....or Merc or Suzuki or OMC...

By putting used with used, you've got a good serviceable rig, and you've got a good marketable product when you go to sell/trade...you're not upside-down.

3-3500 bucks plus the rigging should get you back to chicken-eating and beverage-drinking.

Just MHO...good luck sir!

Gotta agree with gran, but a used 90+, checked out by a reliable shop, get you back in business for less than the re-build.  Try and stick with OMC/BRP, saves you the re-rig costs...

I'd slap a post-OMC 150 ficht on her...that would be fun!!!

Hey Ritchie -

I'm new to this string myself, but I've owned a 1976  "170" for 8 years.  It has a '95 Johnson 88 spl on the back, which is running fine (under 300 hours).  New steering cable and Raptor SS cupped prop last season.  I'm not sure, and I'll call my mechanic, but I don't think a re-build should cost $4000...you can buy mine for $3000 today.

Here's my thought:  These are great little boats, but because they are old, realistically the hulls only have whatever value someone thinks they have.  We all love Aquasports...it's sort of a 'romantic' thing...but rebuilding a hull is not something you can make sense of financially....it's just cool and fun and satisfying.  (We're no different from the guys who fly 1955 Cessna's or ride old Indian's.)   So....the only part of the boat that really, really matters is the power system.  My view is, buy the best engine you can afford, and keep it in pristine condition.  Whether it's a 4-stroke Honda or Suzuki, or a 2-stroke Something Else, the pleasure I get from the boat is directly proportional to the confidence I have in my motor.  I already know that this old hull will get me home, but I want to KNOW that when I back my trailer down the ramp, the engine will start, and I'm actually going fishing.  And I want to KNOW that after spending $250 to catch two trout, I'm going to get back to the dock without calling TowBoatUS.

The 88 spl isn't worth spending $4000 on.  There are much better, more dependable, more sophisticated motors out there.  And you could find a pretty nice used boat and newer motor for $10,000...at least here in Houston.

Cliff
ps - I'm being philosophical...because I'm considering a new aluminum trailer for $2100.  Which makes no sense.

I use this rational everytime I spend money on my old 73' 22-2. These boats are at the bottom of their depreciation curve. If I would have spent $40K on a brand new CC with all the bells and whistles I would be looking at a boat worth 1/2 of what I paid for it in 5-6 years plus the interest expense. Now I can drop $10K-$15K in a restoration of a classic brand with a loyal following drive it for 5 years and break even on the sale. I like that math! It is amazing how one of these boats will strike up a conversation at the ramp, gas station, etc. There are people that dont really know boats who actually come up and say how beautiful the lines are. Boats will never be a sound investment, really never have been.
