Motor "hiccup" question
« on: May 10, 2011, 06:04:44 PM »
Hi all,

So out in the sound for the first time today.  My 1999 Johnson 100 HP  outboard purred most of the day.  idle good, high/mid RPM good; hot start good, cold start good.  Spent about 5 hours on the water and about 1:30 running the motor

Once, and only once after coming down in rpms quickly as I approached a stopping point, it stalled, then had a hard time restarting (perhaps flooded).  Started in neutral and throttled up quickly and it stayed running but sounding off for about 2 minutes; then when down throttling, repeated this whole process once more,  except the second time after a few minutes of full throttle it worked out whatever kink happened and sounded fine the rest of the time.

when  it sounded off at high rpm, it was still delivering full power.  The sound was a purr with an occasional light/quit pop, no loss of rpm.

user error?

indicative of a common problem?

any thoughts?

When did you last change your fuel filter?  With ethanol fuel you need to change them twice as often.  You do have a water separating fuel filter right?   :)     also pull your plugs and see how each cylinder is burning.  I would bet it is a fuel problem but you could have a coil or something breaking down when it gets hot too.

Could have had a piece of trash that got into the system. You do have a new tank and hoses!
I would go with WT's suggestion and change the filter and see if your motor has an inline filter just before the carbs. Not sure about that exact model.

It was most likely as Lew said fuel-related. Just a hiccup.

Its a Johnson. Had a bunch of them. They all have smoker's cough.

I've got an 2004 90 HP (same motor as your's) carb'd motor on our pontoon, and it does have an internal filter screen type, not sure where, but the dealer showed me the nasty thing last year when I was having issues, it was fulll of that yellow ethanol by-product.  Probably in the fuel pump inlet/VRO housing.

Took it out last night and that "Hiccup" was there on the seven mile run upstream.  when I got there I changed the racor, which looked clean, and then trolled for an hour straight and it sounded good.  Shut it down and bottom fished for 30 minutes.  When i started back up, my little problem got much worse.  Spent 40 minutes running back to the ramp with constant rpm loss, knocking, and sputtering.  Had it in the the water for four days, but now its back at the mechanic for a diagnostic.

Since carbs, stator, rectifier, plugs, filter, fuel, fuel lines are all new, I am guessing I have an electrical issue.  Who knows.

We'll see what the mechanic says next week.

Bill, check out part # 28 --- fuel filter. I thought there was one in there.

It should be pretty easy to replace yourself or at least check the condition.

Its at the shop now, so i will either have them check it or check it myself when i get it back.  something went wrong with the ignition electrical and may or may not be related to the fuel supply.

Thanks for the link.  i bookmarked it becasue i expect i will need it in the future.
