Fish Boxes in Aquasport
« on: October 25, 2010, 03:17:05 PM »
I was wondering how well do the fish boxes hold ice? Does everyone use them for what they are for? I used to have a 21' trophy walk around and I never would use the fish boxes due to they never would keep my fish cold or hold ice. I live in Texas and the weather during the summer is 100 degrees.

The only way to keep things anywhere near cold in a fish box is keep block ice in them with a couple of 10-20 # bags of cubed ice. I`m in florida so I know what you mean about keeping things cold.

We used to buy 200 lbs of ice (in 40lb bags) 2 hours before dark. Put it all in the coffin box.  Kept fish and beverages cold all day on our 30mile offshore rig trips.

Just curious, where do your fish boxes drain to?  Do all Aquasports have a fishbox pump?  Or do some drain to the bilge?

On my boat its pumped out by a macerator pump on the port side ofthe boat. I have read that some other owners drilled a hole and put a plug in theres to drain to the bilge area.

Good question.  I'll look this afternoon and reply for certain.  I know we modified the coffin box to put a couple dividers in.  I believe we put a drain plug on port side and between dividers.  Then we pulled the plugs and just let it drain across the deck.  Haven't used the boat for many years.  Just getting it ready for spring.

*Edit....Drain leaves coffin down just on starboard side and drains out starboard as others have mentioned.

My '78 222 CCP had a drain to a starboard side thru-hull.  No pump.

The CCP coffin is well insulated, but I think the 215 fish box is just a liner...  Am I right, Seabob?

The only way I can keep my fish cold in the boxes on hot Florida days is to put block ice in. Actually I freez empty gallon sized juice/milk jugs, they work great, are reuseable, and basically free. Rinse them out really well and you have emergency water as well. I have used the same jugs on 20 plus spearfishing trips. I do, however have one of those coffin freezers to keep them in.

Cubed ice really doesn't work for my fish bozes in the floor, by the time the raw water washdown and all the wet divers and other water gets in there it melts the cubed ice way too fast.

Add a bucket water or so to your ice, then dump a quart of rock salt in with it. You'll have a freezing cold slush that will keep longer, that will be so cold you won't be able to stand to get the fish out.

Fishbox pump that pumps out the fishbox  My forward livewell, freshwater sink and saltwater sink drain into the fishbox as well.
