Hog Rings and Roller Replacement
« on: March 28, 2011, 10:07:51 AM »
The trailer that came with my 215 DC spent most of its life baking in the sun so I bought 28 new rollers for it with hog rings and washers.  Whats the best way to remove the old hog rings and replace the rollers?

A large pair of lineman pliers or large diagonal cutters, (dikes).  Grab, cut, pull.  Were all the roller bushings in good shape?  Its pretty easy, just expensive, my first big trailer was a Continental Roller, nice when they are in good working order.

Thanks for the reply, How do you put the new hog rings on?  Do I need to compress them or will they snap into the holes with a little pressure?

Regular pliers will work, but once in a while you'll pop a few out while trying to get them in position to squeeze, and you'll say %$%%$^#^... so since you have already got all the good stuff, and paid the bucks for the rollers, washers, clips etc... I'd buy a pair of these.. http://www.easternmarine.com/Hog-Ring-Pliers-Large-43/ (might have something at your local hardware store) probably reduce your stress level slightly.  They don't snap in, you would install the bushing ends, roller and washers, then put the ring in your selected pair of pliers and move in for the crimp in the end of the roller shaft, this is when a little movement one way or the other with a reg pair of pliers makes the Hog Ring go flying off to the the other end of the boat trailer   its all pretty self revealing... just another educational series of "boat ownership"

I would think a Tractor Supply or other farm store would have the pliers.
