It figures, as soon as I say something about the motor running great something bad happens.  I have no compression on one of my cylinders all of the sudden.  I hope it's just the rings or gasket but I'm sure it'll be worse. Dang it!

I don't remember anyone having an older 170 then me but I could be mistaken. My engine is not old - on the 3rd since I bought it.
Sorry to hear about the issues you're having.

It's all part of owning a boat I guess.  1971.....that's cool!

I have a '72 170 with an '87 Johnson 85 hp.  Pretty old but she runs like a champ.  Had her out of Little Egg inlet in NJ and Indian River inlet in DE and into the Atlantic this summer.  Not far out....just far enough to fill her with fish.  My 12 and 15 year  old boys seemed to be having more fun than me.   Wouldn't have thought that possible.  Her age just made her affordable to me with all my irons in many fires.  Can't wait to chase some big stripers around this fall.
I am interested in restoring my \"new\" `72 Aquasport 170

We're about to relaunch our 1966 Aquasport (1966)......the engine is newer, not sure what year.   It was still a fun boat before we hauled it; just in much need of alot of TLC.

Bhard-

I think you just might be the winner.  I'm assuming your AS is a flatback of some kind?

It's a 22.2 Flatback with a dive step; hull number 76.  'Figured out the engine is a 1990 Merc.; obviousily not original to the boat.   My brother bought it from Woods Hole (Cape Cod, MA) many years ago, and ultimately replaced the engine.  It's always been a great fishin' boat!  He gave the boat to my son for his 14th birthday last year and we've been rebuilding it ever since.       Thankfully the engine is still running well, 'cause I could only afford either the rebuild or a new engine.  Definately not both!   At least now it stays in the family and will see another generation of fishing enthusiasts!
