bought the 1984 170 osprey
« on: December 18, 2010, 10:24:51 PM »
bought the 1984 170 osprey, $1400.00 It's got a bad motor. But as you know, I just want a 75hp on it anyway. Floor it rock solid, so is the transom. Console looks nice, I think I may like the leaning post too. Does look like it had a repair in the front of the boat. But if so, It was done professionally. It also has a lot of small problems, But I look forward to upgrading the boat.

Looks decent  :thumleft:   What size is the engine? I'd run it for a while and see how she runs as is.  If it runs good, I'd run it as is until you have to make changes. (Take it from someone on their 3rd motor)
Are you going to be keeping her on the trailer?
Congrats

Thanks Guys, I'm looking forward to running her this year. The force motor is supposed to be blown. I'll do a compression check on it, And if it does indeed have compression, I'll fix it and run it a bit. If not, Like  pete said, I have plenty of parts to sell. I should make pretty good money with the force parts. Trim unit, lower unit, Merc controls, electrics, :*: like that will bring good money.

And actually, The trailer is going to get sold. I have a better trailer to put under the boat, So I can sell the trailer separately. It's a real nice heavy trailer capable of holding a 21' boat,So I should get good money on it.

I actually think after I sell what I don't need, That the boat will be free.

Oh and Thanks Rick, I did lay on the motor to see if the transom moved. But Not A bit, Solid as a rock! And the floor doesn't seem to have any soft spots whatsoever. The people I got it off of, Seemed to just be done with it and had no real knowledge of boating equipment. Which obviously was to my benefit. But yes Thanks everybody for the advise. It helped.

Nice looking boat. I’ve always loved the 17. I remember when a friend, bought his in 1971. I only had 6 mons. on my 6 year Army enlistment :salut: , and couldn’t wait to get out and buy one. Didn’t do it though and still regret it.  It was one of the first Aquasports I had a chance to really get a good look at. Fell in love with it. So I guess that’s why I still look fondly at that size, even today. You know he still has that boat.  He is the oldest guide still on the Chesapeake and used that boat for most of that time . He once took it out of Ocean city Maryland. Heading for winter Quarter shoals. Over 30 miles down the coast. The weather came up so bad  that he had to keep heading south. Waves where just to high to turn around. With out them flipping them  . Came in at Chincoteague Virginia, were he gassed up. Then run back up the inter coastal water way. To get home. Man we still laugh about that today. I don’t recommend doing that. He doesn’t either. He is a very experienced Capt. And boater and had a great boat under him. But even he said he was lucky. He said the weather man really blow it that day, because if he would have called for just half that weather they had. He wouldn’t have went.

I would say $500 If you have good rubber, working lights frame thats not rotted and leafs are not ready to break assuming your trailer is 10-15 years old>brand new Load-rite is around $1500-$1650
