Looking for gas tank install opinions
« on: January 20, 2011, 10:58:47 PM »
Hello all,

So when I got my 79 19-6 it had an 23 gallon aftermarket tank in the coffin.  I managed the first season on  this small tank and am looking to start the install of a custom tank in March.  Going to be doing outside so i have to wait till the weather warms a bit (cold here in CT)

did a bunch of research and here's what I have so far.
Gonna have a aluminum tank with an epoxy coating made.  Figuring I am gonna forgo the foam and us Starboard and 5200 method.

Gonna use A-1 fuel and vent hoses and high quality other parts.  Gonna go from the coffin to the control tunnel to the 10 micron racor to the outboard.

I have to figure out a way to remove the old fuel and vent lines that are foamed in without cutting the deck apart...any suggestions :?:

I want to put the fill hatch back on the side of the boat which should be easy once I figure out a way to get the lines run

Please give me any and all lessons learned , tips, hints, etc.  If you have any suggestions on things i havent considered or better ideas I am all for it.

I need to do this right for my sanity in the future and because I can't financially afford to mess around with it.  Whatever I have at the end of it is going to be what i have to live with.

Thanks
in advance
Bill

I did the same thing last year and I'll tell you, your on the right track. Couple things though:

5200 will not adhere to starboard.(or so im told) What your looking for is Fuel Tank Chafe Neoprene Strips.  I slightly roughened the surface of the tank and the strips before I 5200ed them.

Don't do this until you have the new hose  in hand.  Attached the new fill hose to the old  with ducktape and pull it through.  As for the Vent hose, I just used the old one, it was in great shape for 35years old.

And last, be sure to remove that "Dam anti-siphon valve" when you get your new tank (*right Fitz)

Heres a link to my install.  this should help.

Mineral spirits works well, followed up with Simple Green.

Great I have both of those on hand.

A few questions

Should I expect to be able to pull out the old fill/vent lines?    :?: anyone have experience with this.

I am reading through old posts for as much knowledge as i can find.  I found this page

viewtopic.php?f=1&t=5174&st=0&sk=t&sd=a&start=30

which looks to be actual dimensions of a new 19-6 tank   can anyone clarify because this would be a huge help. :?:

Last one, is an anti siphon required for a gas tank that is lower than the engine...I am under the impression it is not and do not plan on using one. :?:

yup, and yup. Just attach the new hose first or its gonna be a biatch to get the new ones in. The orig hoses shouldn't be foamed all the way through, just a bit around the coffin. Can you show us some pics of foam/hoses your talking about?

yea thats mine.  Those are the exact dimensions of a 50gal tank made to fit a 1975 and older 19-6.  I dont have the coffin like yours so you might want to double check.

No, its not required with an outboard, but new tanks are shipped from the shop with the Dam anti-siphon valve.  Maybe you can tell them you dont want it. Either way its only approx $3.00 for new a aluminum barb. http://www.westmarine.com/1/1/9797--3-8 ... -barb.html

Scott,

For such helpful info, here are a bunch of pictures.

Before I new i had a gas leak :D

After I new I had a gas leak...the worst part was that my problems weren't from an original gas tank.  They were because the previous owner took out the original tank and put an undersized tank in the coffin, secured it with nylon straps and ignored it for four years.  By the time I got it the tank was sliding all around the coffin and partially ripped of the sending unit...discovered it on the first trip because of the pool of gas in the bilge weeeeeeeeeeee :pale:

After it was back together, back to some fun with  a topside 19 gallon tank

Somehow I didn't get pictures of the new console I built for electronics, the trim tabs, sidescan sonar, stereo and speakers I installed.  That's the best part cus' I am making it my boat now

Oh yeah, I dont have any close up shots of the foam, but i have a 6 inch hatch under the old fill where the hoses connect to rail and there is foam around them there and you cant really see around the inside of the coffin, but a firm tug gives no movement.

Its at the shop right now getting a few things done, cant get any better shots or try anything out.

Ok.  So i hope to be running new fill/vent lines in the next two weeks.  As soon as i have the lines through I will be ordering a new tank.  i have a quote from speedytanks/atlantic coastal welders, but just got their name from a magazine ad.  anyone have any recommendations on a fabricator based on experience?

The Resource forum is your friend.

Read the entire thread. He has made many tanks for Aqua owners in the NE.
Capt. John can address any concerns you may have concerning this vendor.

Good luck.

Cap'n John recommended Alloy Metal Works. Very reasonably priced  (less expensive)  delivery was quick and easy. Phil was a pleasure to do business with.

After speaking with him,  he's shipped Aquasport replacement tanks the world over.

Couldn't be more pleased with his new tank.
