Price to replace rub rail - does this sound right?
« on: January 15, 2011, 01:23:58 PM »
Staying diligent on my winter boat projects, I measured (with a string) my rubrail, and I'll need 56 feet.  Figure an additional 10% for waste/errors, I'm looking for about 62 feet.

Stopped into Marine Surplus, and they have some Taco rub rail & vinyl insert, in boxes of 50' and 70'.  For the 70' box, they wanted $305 for the rubrail and $55 for the tubular vinyl insert... grand total around $360.   Does that sound right?  Any sources I could get this for less?

Here's the profile of my existing rubrail (white/gray). It's 1.5" wide.  Looking to replace it with black/black, as I think that's a pretty clean look, and I think it will resist discoloration better.  I just hope it won't look funny on my bow pulpit.

That price does not seem bad at all.  I paid 260 I think about a year ago from Surplus Unlimited in Daytona.  I used the same one you are looking at, but a 50' length and I got the last of a two year old stock.  The price went to 300 right after I bough mine.

Did you get the flexible or the rigid rub rail?  I see that iboats.com offers both (Taco).

I got the flexible Taco kit with tubing.  I looked back at my records.  I paid $290 with shipping.  I would say you aren't doing bad with $360.

Well, I might have answered my own question.  Found some black rubrail over at Marine Connection Liquidators, they're selling it for $3.50/foot, which includes the tubular insert!  Comes in either 50' or 70' lenths, so for my 70' length, it'll run me $245    A much better price.  Only catch, is that this stuff is 1 7/8" wide, and mine currently has 1.5" wide.  I'll have to see if I can use the bigger stuff.

If I remember correctly when I used to rubrail 225s, the insert was 11 arm spans, which, in theory is about 66'...but probably 60' would do.  But I'd hate to be short... :x  :x

I measured it with a rope, and came up with 56'.  I figured I would add 10% for errors, and look for 62'.   But since these seem to come in rolls of 70', I should be in good shape!  :thumright:

Well yes you should! :thumleft:

And come to think of it, I had about 8-10' left over...

And the price is right too.  Would run me $245 instead of the $360 at another place.  Plus the cost of screws and silicone.

My only hangup-- it's black rub rail.  Anybody replace theirs with BLACK?  I think the black rub rail on similar boats looks really sharp (i.e. Mako), but I hope I'm happy with the look on my Aquasport...
