Problem with my kicker
« on: January 05, 2011, 11:08:08 PM »
Guys i started my motors today as i do every couple weeks when i don't use the boat, when i got to the 15 hp Yamaha it started and ran OK but i had to keep it choked slightly to keep it running at high idle,it doesn't seem to be sucking air from any hoses so I'm thinking carb, what do you guys think.

Scott,
Could be some varnish or some trash in the main jet, that's why it likes the choke, BC your cutting the air down, hence more fuel.  Sometimes you can run the rpms up a little and stuff the palm of your hand over the carb throat, the sudden vaccum created in the throat of the carb can sometimes pull the garbage up and out of the main jet.  If not, pull the carb, drop the bowl and spray it out with some carb cleaner.

Marc,
chances are it's something like that,I've already had the carb apart a few times for other things,it's a finicky little sucker,i was just hoping it could be something stupid I'm missing, but i think I'll try that palm thing thanks.

Couple of months ago I un-buried my generator from my shed.  It started on the second pull but even after running for 15 minutes I could not get the choke all the way to off without killing it.  Ended up being the gasoline.  It had turned orange and smelled really bad.  Probably only 6 months old.  Dumped the gas, drained the carb bowl, and filled with fresh and it ran just fine.  Once old gas loses some of it's energy the normal air ratio is too much for what is left in the gas.

Just a thought.
