Battery Trays in Transom/Splashwell???
« on: January 10, 2011, 03:51:09 PM »
So with the new boat I will need to provide two new batteries. The original location is in the splashwell. There appears to be provisions for some battery boxes but I do not have them.

Question: Do these boxes need to be sealed or sealed with a vent routed to a dry location?

Seams weird exposing batteries to the elements.

FYI boat is a '79 222 FF.

I did read the "Palmetto Kiwannis tourny" thread and realize the location has been tested. Just wondering what type of enclosure to use.

I also have the Perko switch exposed as well. I think I would feel more comfortable moving that out of the splashwell too.

Thoughts?

My '78 CCP had the two boxes in the splash well.  The perko was in a back corner INSIDE under a pie plate.  I moved it all to the console for a bunch of reasons, corrosion and weight distribution being the main two.

My understanding is the FF's tend to be bow heavy. I don't mind the location as long as there is no issue.

I think I am going to move the switch inboard though.

I'm with JJ, get everything in under cover. What kind of dry storage does she have amidships?

Hi from Ohio State this week...   The standard location was with batts in the spashwell, and my CCP has the batt switch exposed as well.  I would vote with others to put the switch under cover.

My batteries are under the console on my ccp and the switch is accessed on the side of the console inside a hatch with one of my fire extinguishers. Makes for a clean deck.

Thanks guys.

Looks like I will keep the batteries in factory location for now and just move the switch inboard.

Later, when more money is available I will consider moving the batteries. Were, I don't know.

Any reason why I cant cut out compartments under the benches in the cuddy? It makes no sense this was not done at the factory. Else, the batteries will stay put as there is no other place to put them on this boat aside from fabricating a compartment and using up deck space.

Probably not a good idea to put them that low in the hull in a confined space like that. Batteries outgas some pretty nasty fumes depending on temperature change and these gases could collect in that low place and ignite in the wrong situation. My .02. Pics of the area would confirm what I'm thinking.

Exactly. Plus, the weight is detrimental that far forward.

Guess your boat doesn't have twin seat boxes?

That depends on the type.
If you have the coin and can afford a AGM or gel type batteries, then it's a mote point.
If you're using old school (lead acid) then this is excellent advice. Best leave them where they are but relocate the switch. :thumleft:
