Boat flipping question......
« on: September 08, 2011, 01:46:43 PM »
I have a friend that has a 22' center console with bottom hull damage that  we need to flip to repair the damage. What is the easiest and safest way to do it? Keep in mind that we have already removed the motor and console. It is just the bare hull. We can get it off the trailer and on boat jacks if that will help, but it is pristine with the exception of the bottom damage and we don't want to damage anything else flipping it. Also, he has trees all over his property, a 1000 lb electric  winch and a few come alongs if that helps.....

What do you gurus think?

We flipped mine with people power, 6 people. Gently pulled the trailer out from under her, rolled her up on the  gunnel using some old pillows, blankets as not to mark up the sides Than sat her down soft. Picked her up and put the trailer back under her using styro blocks so not to mark up the rail caps.
To flip her back we used a big front end loader with padded tree moving straps.

Matt, did you pivot an old AS on its gunwale to flip it?     Not saying it can't be done, but our old AS's had some flimsy gunwales.

I flipped my old SeaCraft in a steel building with very high beams, using a forklift, some strategically placed ropes tied off on the roof beams, and my dad spotting.

If you can get the bow up and supported (tied off) first, its a little easier to manipulate the stern of the boat with the stern cleats.  After you have the bow elevated and tied off,  lift one side of the stern high enough to pick it up off the trailer via come-along or some other means(you'll want to leave enough slack in the rope that you can lower it again easily), then move the trailer out from underneath the boat.  Now you'll have one side of the stern lower than the other.  Tie the side that's lower to a come along (or some kind of stronger-than-man puller), and pull it in the direction that will result in the boat being upside down...  until the boats upside down.  Then lower it back onto the trailer, and use some form of cushioning at all the contact points the boat makes with the trailer.  That's how we did it anyway, and it was pretty easy.

Trees might work depending on where they are, but I like heavy equipment.

Jessie has the deal right there.  I've done it tons of times, but in a boat plant...with hoists...and big straps...I, too, like heavy equipment!

I took mine to a guy here in Tampa and paid him to flip it.  He had the same setup Bob refers to.  Easy on my end!

With the right equipment, it's a piece of cake...otherwise, can get a little dicey...

Yes.....  the gas tank is empty and the VRO tank has been removed. It is nothing but a bare hull.

I had the new stringers, floor and gussets glassed in before the flip, she never even creaked when on her side
