This is my first time on the forum. I'm the new owner of a '97 200 with a Johnson 90 degree 115. I bought it last February in a crazed  fit during a long Connecticut winter. It was dumb, but I do love the boat. The hull is in great shape although the wiring, switches, breakers, etc., was shot. I replaced all the electrics, the windshield and will remake the canvas over this long winter.

As I am a practicing sailor who was able to retire in Sept, this boat only got in the water twice. I'm used to ripping along at 4 or 5 knots so this boat was a little scary at first. The only thing I was unable to figure out was how to go about making the single handle OMC throttle/shift control work a whole lot easier than this one does.

Anyone have any thoughts on how to fix this? I imagine this has been discussed before but I've not been able to find anything.

First, WELCOME!!!  Even though I see this your first post, I also see you've been a member since August, so you know you are in good company here...

Since you are a reformed blow-boater (LOL), you must be handy with wrenches, as blow-boaters don't like to spend money on someone else doing their maintenance.  That being said, remove the engine cowling, and locate the shift and throttle cable terminations (should be on the starboard side, low on the powerhead).  Remove the Jesus clips (you'll understand why we call them that!) and pull off the ends of the cables from their respective studs.  Now, go and move the shift lever through it's travel.  Chances are, it will move smoothly.  This would tell you that you need to change out your cables, as rarely are the shift and throttle linkages on the engine the culprit...

You bought a '97 200 ..... what? Take a look in our photo gallery and there are lots of docs to help you identify the model boat you have.  Osprey, DC...

Are your cables bent at a really sharp angle as they are routed through the boat?

In '97, we were only building a 200 Osprey.  Assuming the boat wasn't re-rigged, I would guess his cables are routed properly.  Preston Yoder, the guy in '97 who rigged that boat, was very good...also one of my fishing buddies...

Only Sailbad can truly answer this but I'd bet the "200 Osprey" was always there, just above "(photo in spring)".

Maybe I need the Capt. Morgan.  :drunken:

that is true... :roll:

shortly after i repowered my osprey, the shift cable broke(the plastic end under the cowl) and the movement was fairly firm, i went ahead and replaced both shift and throttle, and sprayed some lube on the linkages and in the shifter, shifts like new :cheers:

12F outside...4 logs of seasoned ash on lay-Z-burn in the fireplace...72 inside :cheers:

Proline and Seanymph under canvas...chargers keeping 6 marine batteries topped off...2 on the Proline, 1 on the SeaNymph, 31 series in the jeep and 31 series on the basement sump pump  :compress:

Sail dude...it may just be old cables...over time, even well run cables get sticky.  You can shoot some slippery down the cables at both ends and hope it helps...it may.  But old is old...change them out, make sure your engine linkages are free, and chances are you'll be good to go.
