Proper spreader light wiring?
« on: October 24, 2010, 07:41:58 PM »
I'm looking for the proper way to wire spreader lights on my t-top. The way they are wired now fuses blow, wires even get warm if left on to long. Should they be wired through a relay like fog lamps on a car, or is there another way?

They should be wired through a relay if the switch you're using now is not sized to handle the current.

If your wiring is heating up. the gauge (like the switch) is too small. You can never have too heavy a gauge wire but practicality and cost dictate sticking with a gauge size that will handle the load (minimum voltage drop) and fit in the available space.

Standard Carling Toggle switch handles 25A.  Upsize th breaker feeding the switch to 15A, the 16GA feeding the switch and lights can handle it.  But 2 spreaders need a 15A breaker...
