I am not 100% sure of the years, but I believe the early johnson's like your 74' model had the tilt trim unit mounted outside the transom bracket, it was a special transom bracket just for the TTU set up, later they went to the TTU indside the transom bracket like all are today, I don't think your going to have much luck getting that to work.  I had an old 73' model 70 HP, what I did was mount a bracket on the back of the cowling, with reinforcement inside, the bracket would allow me to slip a 3/4" stainless steel short pipe into it when I wanted to raise the motor, pretty easy using the leverage.

The best advice I can give you, is contact Bill Kelly at http://www.maxrules.com/ he is a friend of mine, and lives here in the Pensacola area.  He has been building, modifying and playing with OMC outboards his entire life, if anyone can tell you what you need, he can.  Tell him Marc sent you.

The trim and tilt system from a 1980 OMC will not work on a 74 model year. 1973-1976 85-135 hp and some 77`85-115 will work ( external mount system). From 78` on, the engines were completely redesigned (internal mount system) with very few parts interchangable with older models.  The old style system is pretty rare these days. You may be able to find one on a antique outboard forum, but like anything else that is rare be prepared to pay some serious coin for a complete working system.

Not sure what you are asking. As I said, There is nothing compatable between those model years. Your powerhead won`t even bolt up to the 1980 midsection. OMC standardized the midsections based on the 140 hp design from 78`on. Let this one go unless you can find a 73-77 trim system.
