Gear Shift issue. Ocean Runner 200 no shift movement
« on: August 12, 2010, 09:20:35 AM »
Hey folks, hope summer has been great for all. Without any functional warning - performance changes, forward / reverse gone. Seems to be cable not moving at engine linkage. The linkage part on engine seems to move by hand (have not pulled cable off to test fully). If it is the cable, any tips on how to best replace. How to remove shifter from helm area (no access). Did I (my son) snap the cable by raising the engine all the way when it was turned hard to port? Thanks for any advice. BooGoo

Sounds like you already know the next step in troubleshooting it... disconnect from the shift lever on the powerhead... could be a broken part in the binnacle or control box??

BG,
Pretty sure you got my message on THT, so here's a copy of that for the other members...

Lower the motor, remove the cable end from the shift slide. Now see if the cable moves when you move the shift/throttle lever. If the cable moves, then the issue is with the shift linkage on the motor. Hopefully this isn't the case. If the cable doesn't move, then obviously it is either broken or somehow it has detached itself from the binnacle. You'll need to remove the binnacle anyway. Just realized you have a 215 DC. Fun to get that side mount binnacle off there. I think we actually installed that binnacle before the boat was decked. Is there an 8" access pie close to the binnacle?

If there's not, I guess there will be one soon??

Thanks guys. I went to boat prepared for a long day...as it turns out the button in the shifter at the helm didnt disengage fully from prior use. It was stuck in the bypass mode. (obviously I dont know the proper terminology) I got it to normal position and like magic...no more problem. (Other than the problem of why it happened) Any comments on lubricating or other? How? Bob noted I dont have access but it looks like I can take about 7 screws out to possibly remove, not sure. The the small screw in the middle of "button" that seems to be a logical place to pull appart, unless of course it doesnt go back together properly.

Well, damn, BG, seems like you and I are posting twice!  Shoot some silicone lubricant in the hub of the lever around the "throttle only" button.  Keep pushing the button, working the lever, re-spray until you get it worked in.  Probably some gunk has gotten in there over the years hanging it up...
