215 Versus 225 Explorer
« on: August 15, 2010, 01:43:08 PM »
Hi everyone, new member and I have been following this site for months, great information! I am interested in maybe buying a 215 Explorer W/around, have looked at a 225 Explorer already and am wondering how much of a difference in ride etc. if I do some offshore travel in N.J. inlets and Atlantic to fish?  The 215 would be easier to trailer, less power needed etc. but am very curious to hear what members think between these two hulls.  Are they similar in rough water performance or not? Thanks for anyone's input!  Dave :salut:

The year produced makes a good deal of difference.     The "pop top" later Genmar models were very different from the "straight top" Aquasport models.  They look different and were made somewhat differently.  There are advantages of each (according to legend, hearsay, and marina bar talk/lies    ) - the later models had more features, were wired better (thanks Bob!) and were lighter - the earlier models are reputed to be more heavy-duty and robust.

Pick the one you like - there are few "bad" Aquasports out there!  But I will tell you that few owners move down in size when they trade - so if you have a choice and all things are more or less equal - go for the bigger boat and the bigger power option - you may save yourself a change later...

The 225 was an "AS" only hull and deck, derived from the earlier 230s like RickK's.  The 215 was the identical twin to thew Wellcraft 210 Coastal...

The 225 was/is really a much larger boat than the 215...

Welcome aboard Dave  :!:  :!:
As Gf said, you can get the Aquasport version 215s and the Wellcraft version 215s depending on the year.  We have plenty of members with both that'll pop up soon.

Thanks for the great response!  i had a 23 Wellcraft Coastal in 1986, 200 Merc and ran off the Jersey shore a little, I guess the 215 Explorer might be a tad small?  Are the center console and walk/around hulls the same or not from year 2000 and newer?  Great site, glad to see the "saving" of all the great boats!!  Dave in Pa   :D
