Hi all,

I'm new here. I bought a boat that was advertised as an Aquasport in the boat trader but the registration say Coburn as the manufacturer. Any info on this would be appreciated. I can post pics if I need to, but it looks just like a 222 flatback.

I'm torn between selling and restoring so I'm hoping I have something worth restoring....

What you have is one of the first collaborations between Coburn and Sargent, the original founders of Aquasport. The boat is from somewhere between 1964 and 1966. And it is definitely the same boat as the 222 flatback - unless they built some one-off before then. The company was called Coburn & Sargent and the boat name was Aquasport. The name of the company came later.

I bought the boat from a guy who got it from Chapman's School of Seamanship. I take it that it must have been used "well". He rebuild the deck, close the transom and hung a 200 Merc on a Armstrong bracket.

I really like the boat and use it all the time but he did a pretty lousy job and a lot of the top-coat and fairing work is lifting. It also has a hard top that is way to heavy for the frame and to make it worse he added an aluminum electronics box overhead.

I just ordered an offshore rig but if what I've got is worth anything I'd be tempted to strip it down and start again. Let me know what you think.

I don't think the boat has any intrinsic value just because it was one of the first Aquasports - unfortunately, there just is not that kind of collectors market for Aquasports. On the other hand, the original flatbacks are great hulls and if you have time on your hands (lots of time), the end result would almost certainly be worth the effort. You can look at the photo gallery on the site to see what some of the members have done with 222 flatbacks - there are some beautiful examples.
