1997 245 Osprey Weight
« on: May 10, 2010, 09:08:35 PM »
I weighed my boat this afternoon to help gather data for my propping issues, I weighed it on a scale, trailer and all, it came in at 7000 Lbs.  The trailer is a pretty heavy duty 5" channel galvanized, I am just guessing the weight around 1200 lbs.  The 250 HPDI is 539 Lbs,  NADA and Iboats says the boat weighs 4100, probably 25 gallons of fuel (150 lbs) batteries, anchor, T-top (maybe 250 lbs).

So Total I am thinking 2140 Lbs over the weight of the boat, 7000 - 2140 =  4860.  It seems I am somewhere around 700 - 800 lbs over if the boat really weighs in at 4100 dry.  Any idea how accurate these figures of dry weight are? Where would I check to see if the foam in the hull is water logged, where are the foam copartments located, any ideas appreciated.
Thanks

Double check the estimated weight of the trailer - may be a little low for a heavy duty galvanized.

The galvanized '07 Load Rite tandem bunk with 5" box tube steel I have now (built for a 22' to 25') weighs 1600 lbs.  Replacing a painted steel Shoreland'r tandem roller under our 25' several years ago, I called Shoreland'r for the weight.  They didn't have the exact specs on the trailer (it was about 11-12 years old at the time), but the factory rep estimated the weight in the 1600 to 1700 lbs. range.

If those figures are close to your trailer weight - it narrows the gap to 300-400 lbs.

Aquasport lists the "dry weight" of your boat as 4100 lbs. This includes a 200hp outboard. Weight is approximate according to their 1997 catalog. "Dry weights" are usually just that. Vehicles (cars, motorcycles, boats) are complete but contain no fluids.

Put 3/4 tank of fuel in it this weekend, and then put it in the water, floated at the pre-existing water line that you see in the old bottom paint, and the scupper drains were at least 3-4" above the water, so I don't think I have a waterlogged weight problem.  I looked at NADA and Iboats and noticed the 245 Osprey is heavier than any other comparable 24-25 foot CC that I looked up.  Took it out in the Pensacola Bay after fueling it up, and it was pretty nasty out there this weekend, and I was very impressed how dry the ride was, and how well the weight of the boat busted through the waves.

Good to hear about the dryness.  Depending on the proximity of the chop, she could be a bit wet for the passengers riding aft...

As I tell folks...  your on a boat, if you want a guarantee that you won't get a little spray now and then, you should stay at the house.  Thanks
