Installing GPS
« on: June 12, 2010, 05:06:53 PM »
Just paid $670 for the Garmin 3206.  One question for the experts.  I installed the GPS antenna on my hardtop nice and neat by drilling through my hardtop. But I have just realized that the GPS antenna needs to be 3 to 6 feet away from the VHF antenna- currently it is 24inches.

Should I redrill and move it to the min requirement of 3 ft from VHF antenna?

The is the "ideal" install and the "good" install.  I think you will find your GPS works just fine as-is.  I see GPS antennas within close proximinity of radar arrays and VHF antennas quite often.  When asked, the owners say it all works fine.  Frequencies for GPS and VHF are very different, so interference is unlikely.  I would not drill another hole and reroute unless I needed to - "if it ain't broke, don't fix it..."   :thumright:

It will work just fine.  The only issue you would run into is with radar.  With radar it's not the distance but to not have the gps antenna in the plane of radiation of the radar.  Put it higher or lower than a radar antenna.

I decided to move the gps antenna and I also installed a new shakespeare SS mount and 8' antenna with the vhf/fm-am splitter. A good day of upgrades.  I would forever feel the GPS antenna should be the min 3 ft and it that would eat at me over the years. So I did it right way.

Thanks for your quick responses BTW
