Battery Question for Seabob
« on: May 10, 2010, 05:31:05 PM »
Bob,I was looking at my Aquasport yesterday and noticed there where two battery trays in the transom of the boat.My batteries are under the console. The reason I ask you this question because I sent you pics of the wiring and you said you did it.When they were build were the batteries in the rear.Is the rear a bad place for them? You wouldn' have a copy of the manual for a 1998 Aqua 245 tournament master?

Thanks

Not sure about your boat but in my Explorer, and others the batteries are in the transom, the only place to put them, and I've never had a problem, you should have better weight distribution with them in the console, hope this helps.

Scott,
They were exactly in the same place on an Explorer as the were on an Osprey.  Tell you guys a story about the bilge...just give me a few...

So anyway, back in '97, me, Brian Buck, and Tony Fernandez build the first dual-station 245 Osprey with 2 of the first OMC Ficht motors in the world, 150 Evinrudes.  Man, they ran like a dream.  So me, Brian, Matt Baily, and Matt's buddy are given her to enter and fish the Palmetto Kiwannis tourny, staging/Captain's meeting at Leverock's on Manatee Ave. October. Sat. morning , leave the dock, motor down the ICW to Big Pass, cast net for bait, then off we go...MAN!, 3-5s all the way out to the boxcar reefs, those motors were submerged half way up the cowlings every 20-30 secs., which means the entire splashwell was under water the same duration.  Got absolutely soaked, but finally got to where we could start trolling.  Out of curiosity, since I also installed the rubrail on that boat, so I knew how to seal her ass end, I took a real good look in the bilge when we weren't getting any strikes...DRY AS A BONE!  And that's how we all were taught to rubrail and seal the boats you guys call your own!

So if your batts are in the bilge where they originally were installed, they'll be fine.

Just wanted to share that with you...

Sometime I'll tell you about when, if we really tried, we could have made anchors out of a pair of 200 Evinrudes in the bay on a 245 Explorer...

Bob,

My batteries are under the console.I saw battery trays in the transom assuming that's where they belong. If that's coorect,is it better to put them in the original spot in the back?

Mark,
That's up to you.  It WILL reduce the amount of heavy batt cable you have running forward, but other than that, if your happy with where they are, just leave them be...

Thanks Bob,

You wouldn't have an owners manual for a 98/246 Tournament Master?

You might want to PM Capt. Bob here.  He's the man with all the printed info...

I myself have never seen a "manual" for a given model Aqua. That doesn't mean they don't exist but....
I did own a new 1986 170 (Bob Hewes Boats) and it only came with that year catalog (boy I wish I still had that catalog).

I do not have any info on the 1998 model year.

Owner's manuals were basically "generic" at that time.  So, basically, Mark, hopefully you can get all the info you need here... :D
