Darn Scuff Marks on 1998 215E
« on: March 14, 2010, 03:05:40 PM »
Hi all, I got those thick nasty scuff marks on the sides of the hull from dam tie up and dock rash.
I have tried buffing them off with wax cleaners but no luck. Some people use acetone or lacquer thinner.
Most say acetone will soften the Gel and so will Lacquer thinner. Forget the Mr. Clean sponge this is on there heavy.
It's not just a black heel type mark. It's more of a thick streaked rubber or plastic that's almost burnt on.
If anyone has fixed this I would appreciate your help.

Thanks all

You might want to try a DA (random orbital sander) with 800 or 1000 grit paper, then buff back with buffing compound...

A.  I would try Soft-Scrub first - the one with the bleach in it.
B.  Next I would go with the 3M Marine Rubbing Compound.
C.  If neither of those works, you are now in sandpaper land, and it ain't fun.

However, 99% of the time, I've found A or B works, and C can be avoided.

Good luck - and post some "before" and "after" pics so we can learn from your experience!

You have two issues. The heavy removal, and next the stain. Would go with the soft-scrub first (per Cap'n John) with a light grit Scotch-Brite(3M) pad. After removing the funk, come back on it with On-Off hull cleaner(acid) with the same pad to remove the residual stain.

3M compound should take care of it with a industrial grade buffer be careful with it if you leave it on one spot for to long you WILL BURN THE GEL COAT!!!

i had to compound my whole hull last spring. I took that stripe off the side and the decals  and since i have a blue hull there was obviously a mark from where the stripe was, and my hull is a 2000 and was never compounded before so it needed it. Came out great! After the compound i used the McGuire flag ship wax i swear by the stuff as well long lasting and extremely easy to work with!
