Air tube/bags for flotation!
« on: December 21, 2009, 06:13:20 PM »
Was just wondering   why not use air rubber tubes for flotation in the hull?
If I ever live long enough to tackle a project like redoing a deck, I would give air a try.

My deck would have two hatch way in the back to access the tubes if they ever get damage for some reason.

No water absorption
Weighs less then foam
More flotation ?
Cheaper and would be really easy to make, it doesn't need to be super tough
Would be so much easier to run wires too, deflate the tube, take them out
If your boat is going to sink, take the tubes out and use them as floating noodle

Ha, never mind, that stuff I got is better then I thought

As long as you don't overinflate, if you did you could call the boat " Bubbledeck " or "Bubblesole".
I think that is a great idea!
You would have to make it part of your checklist before you put in, check yer pressure!

I think I would fill my tubes with hydrogen, to save some weight

I don't think the coast guard would approve of you having some hydrogen bombs under your deck?  LOL  I think I'd move up one notch on the periodic table to helium!  But that would leach out over time anyways.

IMO the float bags would be a nice touch.  I sell a ton of them for sailboat classes that require them.  They are used mostly in dinghy sailboats.  Would be worth a shot.

I used the Walmart swimming pool dealies that kids play with.  They look like a four inch round styrofoam baseball bat.  Run them under the floor wherever you can - also under the gunnels.  Cheap and quick solution.
