Quick Crete in Stringers?
« on: November 10, 2009, 06:53:24 PM »
Hello Everything,

I am totally lost right now and so is the company restoring my aquasport. He called me today after ripping the floor up and said "uhhhh youre not going to believe this, but they used quick crete in your stringers." He has never seen this, I am going to go take a look tomorrow at them, pretty crazy. Has anyone ever heard of such a thing?????

Dang.  I have never heard of such a thing.  Sounds heavy and brittle.  Not what a stringer should be.  Good luck with it, I don't know how you get rid of that other than cutting everything out.

If there ever was a post that's worthless without pics, this would be one. :o

Quick crete,
As in Sakrete? Concrete in a sack :?

I would believe "zonolite", an additive to concrete for roof decks and ground stabilization. Industry known as "light weight" concrete. We used it on high rise roofs for waterproofing. Minimizes static load, holds up well to foot traffic and rarely leaked. Don't know how well it would work in stringers and..... it certainly doesn't float, at least not like foam.

It would appear that someone else has been under the deck before. :o

If indeed this is true, you gotta get a pic of these stringers.

Good luck.

Well I just spoke with my uncle who was an aquasport dealer for many many year way back when and he advised me that aquasport along with some other manufactures did actually use a "concrete like" material in the boats. Not only did it help with leveling and weight distribution but it was obviously very cheap and an effective way to do things. I was blown away by this. I will post some pics of this when I go down there and take a peek...

i don't know about power boats but I know of a local sail boat mfgr that uses a type of concrete along with anything else they can toss in the keel for ballast.  So it could be feasible.

They probably don't know it's used on the top of the stringer only in between the top of the stringer and the bottom of the sole.  Seabob can chime in but I bet that is what they are talking about.  Inside the stringer is foam I'm sure.

Yeah, I think Alex might be on to something.  Concrete in the stringers makes ZERO sense as a factory deal.  I suppose a half-a$$ rebuilder could have done it though...

YES, the concrete was sandwiched between the top of the stringer and the bottom of the deck. Not actually "in" the stringer like it was described to me. Just saw it the other day when I went by to see the boat.

Yup - that was an early bonding adhesive.  Looked like conrete, but was not.
