I need some help with Paint
« on: November 18, 2009, 06:51:24 PM »
Hello all,

I will be recieving the 19-6 back here in a couple of weeks. The boat will be sent back to me with all cracks, lines, dings etc already sanded down and filled, leaving the boat with a flawless surface. This is true for both the hull and the gunnels. I need some help on how to paint the outside of the boat. I'd like to do a white hull and black gunnels, since my tower is powdercoated white and the shade is black. I saw an article in the florida sportsman explaing how to roll on gunnel paint and how to do it, but it was very brief. Does anyone have a website I could visit that would go more in depth? Maybe some tips? I want it to look perfect with a  very high gloss. Same for the hull! Any and all info would be awsome!!!!! Thank you in advance  :compress:

thank you akbridge... it looks like it is a pretty "cookie cutter" project. Just follow directions and everything should come out just fine!

If it's not an issue financially, look into a compressor and automotive spray gun.  You don't need a huge compressor - the Bostich pancake at lowes for $180 would work fine). I think it's pretty easy for a first timer to get a professional finish.  I used Interlux brightside and it was my first time spraying.  I think it probably is a lot easier than rolling and tipping.  Only takes me 15 minutes to spray the hull.  If you need tips on spraying I'm sure there are a lot of people here who can help.  I found that keeping the pressure around 40 psi and the spray control all the way on the vertical fan pattern was easiest for me.  Another tip is to alternate primer colors (white and grey), starting with the opposite of the color of the hull.  This will help you see how the paint is going on and make adjustments. See the pics in my post today for the result from a first timer.
