Need help with Electronic Control Module
« on: August 06, 2010, 01:09:15 PM »
Hi, I have a 1998 215 Explorer with a Volvo/Penta 5.7 GS. I'm getting no spark. So I put a brand new coil on and still no spark.
My friend took a volt meter and checked the juice to the coil and their is no pulse. It seems the Electronic Control Module must be bad.
The guy at the Marine place says they rarely go out. My question is are their any fuses, or anything that would stop the Juice from
reaching the coil or plugs.

All wires, cap, rotor, coil are new.

thanks for any help.

check the positive side of the coil with the ignition on, there should be 12 volts, a neutral safety switch or deadman switch could be preventing the voltage from reaching the coil, the negative side of the coil goes to the distributor end which is where your pulse is signaled and the coil will build the high voltage.  On some I/O's, there was a switch on the throttle/shift linkage, that momentarily interupted the ignition when shifting from FWD - Neutral - Rev to make it easier on the gear case.

Just for some info here, the "Kill" switch will ground the coil, the motor will turn over but no spark.  The Neutral Safety interrupts the ignition circuit, motor won't turn over.

Shift interrupt switches on I/Os typically retard the timing so the RPMs drop, and, as Marc said, making it easier on the gearcase as you are going in and out of gear...
