170 Speed

Just curious about the speed on a 170 I just bought. It has a '96 Suzuki DT100 and top right now is around 36 mph. I think this is pretty good for the hp and size boat but wanted to get other opinions. I am thinking about moving up to either a 115 or 140( I know the max hp is 130) and I'd like to know if anyone is running a 115hp on a 170 and what is top speed.
All opinions welcome.
Thanks

40mph with 115 Johnson on my 170. I would say the 100 is probably about right on the boat. I've had both 115 and 110 on the boat with no difference in speed.
A 140 might be a little heavy and definitely over HP if you want insurance.

42mph with a 115, 21 inch prop and a lot of playing with trim (oh, and 2 people on board)

I had 43 with a 125 and two people on board. Im not sure how heavy that 140 would be but my 125 makes the back sit pretty low, check the weight and see if the extra mphs are worth it I usally cruise just on plane around 20-25.

Thanks to all, I think I've made my decision. Stick with what I've got until it leaves me stranded and then go with a 115. Hell, I can't catch fish going 40 mph.

Good decision - maybe a new 90 would do almost the same speed and be more efficient? I usually cruise at 30, so I still have a third throttle left for playing around.

I have 140 Johnson on my 170 and it keeps the sculpers underwater when stopped. I plug them before stopping and that takes care of that. As to speed it goes pretty good but I need to take the GPS with me the next time I go out to find MPH. Plan on going fishing Sat. so maybe I can check it then.

I've got a 2003 90HP Yamaha on mine and I can't seem to crack the 40MPH barrier. Trimmed out and 1/4 tank of gas I can achieve 38/39MPH.

Not bad for a 90
- I only get 2 mph more with a 115
