Possible VRO problems
« on: October 03, 2009, 08:36:31 PM »
The other week I tried to take the boat out so the night before like I always do I plugged the battery charger in for the night when I woke up I went out the start the boat being a 91 evinrude 140 I make it a habit of warming the boat up while on land and hooked to the charger.  The usual minute went by without the motor starting so I check the ball it was firm when I look at the water separator it was really dark like 25 to 1  ratio, seeing as my fuel/oil is not premixed this concerned me.  I proceeded to drain the fuel from the motor back passed the water separator, thinking it was due to the fact that I didn't have alot of fuel in the boat I went and put 10 gallons in the tank. I then tried again still nothing and the water separator filled back up the a super rich mixture, assuming it had the be the diaphragm on the VRO letting oil back thru the gas line I field stripped the VRO and not a single problem all o rings are intact, diaphragm looks brand new        So just to trouble shoot it some more today I took the VRO off all together and premixed a 5 gallon container still nothing ONE question if I remove the VRO do I leave it plugged in or not        Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cool thanks I actually got it running in time to hit the sandbar today I replaced the plugs, racor filter, and primer ball all needed it but I think the cause of this whole problem was caused by the primer ball in addition to not having alot of fuel in the boat. The boat runs like a top now got up to 46 mph today at 6200 rpm    and it idles like a dream.

If the VRO fails, the chances of oil making its way BACK towards the tank through the pump is almost none. The oil and gas mix going out of the pump not before the diaphram if I remember. It's been a while. You should really change props to something with more pitch. 6200 is way too much to push that motor at. You should be around 5600 max.

The rev limiter is made for 6,500 rpm's not saying that is a good number but they made the motor that way and I only have only been able to push the motor to 6200 once kinda weird I dont ever go above 5000 to run and now and then ill open the butterflies to knock off any cob webs :D  once and a while
