Is October the best fishing month?
« on: October 22, 2009, 05:22:15 PM »
OK, so I vote October is the best fishing month - at least here in the Carolinas.  Seems like you can catch almost anything in fresh or salt water!  The temps are good, crowds are gone, and a day on the water is just plain enjoyable.

I got in earlier than expected yesterday - and had nothing on the schedule for the afternoon - so you guessed it - time to fish!  So wifey and dog and I dropped Gone Fission down in the water and headed out.  Air temp and water temp were both about 75, which is nice, and the sky was a clear blue...  But back to fishing - It's about a quarter-mile idle out of the marina, and I saw some bait down about 10 feet, so I tied on a DT10 and tossed it over for the idle out.  Then took another rod and tied a Rat-L-Trap shad pattern on and tossed it out on the other side.  About the time the second lune hit the water, the first rod bent over - fish on!    So the motor goes into neutral and I'm reeling the fish in, when "BAM!" the second rod goes bends toward the bottom!  A double hookup and I still haven't left the marina!    I asked the wifey to reel the second one in, but she had a fresh beer in hand and was very comfy on the coffin cushions, so it had to wait a bit...     But the fish was still on when I got to it, and that was just the beginning.  Caught lots of largemouth, spotted bass, striper hybrids, white perch, and even some bluegills...

It was one of those great October days - I think if you could hit the water with a lure you could catch fish.  8)

My advice - get out there and catch some fish!  :thumright:   See ya on the water!

Making a poll of this would be cool but the different species will warrant different times of the year.  :(

We camped on the boat 2 weekends ago (still in Oct) and you'd of swore it was July - smoking out there and the "no see-ums" .... we had to get in the water at 630 ish AM to get away from them. (forgot the "Skin so soft"  :(  )

:thumleft:  Agreed- at least here in the Carolinas

I went out last weekend with some buddies, and we caught so many trout we stopped counting.  Plus, I caught these beauties, which I deemed worthy of a picture-

We only fished for about 2hrs because the weather got real nasty toward the afternoon.  Fish were caught on mud-minnows that were caught in a cast net.  If I were you, I'd take Fission's advice- get out there and catch some fish!

I'm a little ashamed to admit it, but I've never taken any home and cooked em' up.  I've heard Trout are better, as Reds are a little gamey, but I don't know from experience.  I very rarely keep anything I catch-  I like to let them go, so I can catch them again another day  8)

Specks are better table fare than Drum.  I also almost never keep a drum, but I will keep a few trout sometimes.  Lightly bread some filets and fry them up in hot oil - or put 'em on the grill - they are tasty either way!
