Aquasport 222 purchase advice
« on: September 20, 2009, 03:16:14 PM »
Hey guys, I am looking to purchase an aquasport CC.  I think it is a 222 but, I am not positive.  It is a 1986 with newer twin yamaha 130s on it.  I was curious if you had any recommendations on what to watch out for (gas tank?  stringers? etc)?  I have attached a picture of the boat.  Can anyone confirm it is a 222?  thanks

I will also be selling my 96 20ft Osprey if anyone is interested?  The boat is located in Swansboro NC but, I live in Raleigh.

Welcome aboard sharkwing1  :!:  :!:
Looks like it could be a CCP - but could use more pics for sure.  Know anything else about it?  Does it have a have a "coffin" in front of the console?

Rick's right - unless that picture is way out of whack, that's a CCP.  The hulls were built in a 20' (200), 22' (222) and 25' (246/250) versions ( viewtopic.php?f=1&t=3847 ), a lot more info on plenty of other threads, too.  From the one picture this one looks like a 22' - the 246/250s were the big guns of the line and that hull looks a little larger than the 200.  Can always double check with a tape measure.  More pictures are always better!

Mine is also an '86 - a 222 CCP.  There's a Coast Guard capacity plate ( http://www.boatus.org/onlinecourse/revi ... info1a.htm ) on mine mounted below and to the left of the steering wheel on the stern side of the console that specifically lists the model as a 222 CCP.  My boat is not at the house now or I'd post a pic of the plate for you.  Anyway, the capacity plate lists 245hp as maximum - so if the weight of twins isn't a problem, a pair of 130s should be fine.  Some states and insurance companies can be pickier than others, though.

As far as what to look for - there are a lot of good threads here with excellent pre-purchase inspection advice.  My personal experience only involves a relatively low hour northern hull that spent most of its life indoors so I can't give you much to go on as far as 'problems' with the hull on a first hand basis.  Overall these have been very good hulls - but as usual spend time checking transom condition, floor for soft spots, leak down and compression checks on the 130s, etc.  I'm sure others will follow with more advice.

Good luck - let us know how it works out.  It looks like a nice rig :!:

Thanks a lot for the information!  I have posted a few more pictures.  I am told the gas tank is 87 gallons and it has a 100 gallon livewell?  I a expecting to find the livewell to be much smaller but, who knows?  It looks like its in good shape and should be a nice upgrade from my 96 20ft Osprey.  I have attached a few more pictures.

I am a little worried about the storage area in the boat but, I will find a way to make do.  Does anyone know how much storage if any is in the console?

Thanks!

SW1,
Welcome aboard.
My concern would be the tank. My CCP original tank lasted 12 years. Others last longer.
Most (if not all) were mounted the same way and corode on the underside under the mounting straps (where water is trapped).
Leaking is often hard to detect (without removal) but usually shows when the tank capacity is reached (85 gal on the 222) and heavy seas cause a shift in tank position.

A common technique for inspection is to remove one of the inspection plates over the tank and smell. This isn't the perfect test. You may be smelling a leak in either the filler connection or vent connection but it's better than nothing. Still, I would be thinking along the lines of a tank replacement (if it has not already been done) in the future.

Good luck.

The console is roomy to a degree. I moved my batteries there and can fit a carry on tackle box.

I utilize the "coffin"/fish box (which appears missing in yours) for the biggest part of my storage needs. I stow the life jackets in the hatch foward of the box (some use the cutouts along the sides). There is abundant space under the deck where the coffin was which some use by adding hatches to this area.

100 gal live well? Must be aftermarket.

Thanks for the heads up.  I will try and find out if it has ever been done.
