Roller or Bunk Trailer for a 17
« on: December 01, 2009, 09:59:50 PM »
Looking to buy a trailer for my 17 but am tossed up between a roller style or bunk style. It would be stored for the winter (Dec thru March) on the trailer otherwise the boat stays in the water all summer. I would like to be able to take it out to Montauk a few times a season too.

any advice would be appreciated.

Not a Aquasport expert but in all my years of owning some bigger Alumacraft/Lund type Musky boats was under the impression that a bunk style trailer gave better support to the hull. Although i did have a 17' Alumacraft Competitor for 6 yrs on a Roller style trailer that i probably trailered close to 20,000 in its life without any hull issues. That rig weighed about 2000# total with the usual gear in the boat
Just my .02

I think that your location has more to do with what type of trailer you use.  Here in SW FL we have "massive" tides of 3 ft max (usually 2ft ) so we're not battling the 10-20ft tide swings of the NE.  From what I understand the roller trailers are more for where you may need to "drag" your boat back onto the trailer because there is no water at the ramp anymore and you can't back in any farther (or the same for launching).  I have heard that the rollers are not great support BUT you have to use what you have to use to launch and retrieve in your location.  Bunk trailers are great "drive on" type trailers.
