Questions about AS Titles
« on: July 11, 2009, 08:53:25 AM »
Hey all.  I have a question about titles.

I AM TOLD that if a restoration of my 22 2 exceeds 70% you can title the restored boat as "New 2009" rather than a 30 something year old boat (in addition to insurance advantages of new vs used).

The next question is what effect would the new boat "builder name on the title" have on the eventual resale.  Ie:  Would you advertise a 1971 AS at birth or a 2009 "whatever"?  Would that effect the value or mislead the actual truth.

Have I confused you or myself?

Check the link to the article on HINs http://www.boattitleanswers.com/tag/hin-history/.  Basically, you are looking at changing something akin to changing a VIN, which may not be a good idea.  If there is no HIN or BIA identification, then the boat could be relabled as an '09, but it would be with a homemade ID, as you couldn't attribute it to AS.  I would try to find the HIN and check with the Coasties on both the HIN and the concept of "70% restoration".  Never heard of it myself, but I could be wrong.

You might want to contact Shine over at Boat Builder Central.  He mentioned pursuing a new title on his Flatback rebuild since it is all composit materials now.  I'm not sure of the outcome though.

He has a rebuild thread on this site but he is one of the owners of Boat Builders Central, an on line supply company.  Go to http://Bateau2.com or http://boatbuildercentral.com/about.php  (for a phone number).

I have seen several boats listed this way.  There will be a Mako, for instance, minus all the factory stickers and tags, and it will be listed as 21' FISHERMAN'S CUSTOM CENTER CONSOLE.  Then there will be a bunch of pictures, and sometimes they tell you it was a Mako shell before the rebuild, sometimes they don't.

I dunno...  I think I'd rather buy a rebuilt AQUASPORT than a CUSTOM, but I guess it depends on the quality of the rebuild.

IF you are trying to rebuild to sell, maybe you should take a poll.   If in doubt, the name brand DOES have name recognition going for it.
