TACH TROUBLES
« on: June 23, 2009, 02:04:52 PM »
1973 19-6 1983 Evinrude 140 tach was not wired total mess of wires when I bought the boat. I cut out all of the BS that was for old ecectronics and tried to get the tach to work. according to the schematics I found thanks   to a site member it said the grey wire from the harness should be for the tach. NO WORKIE.. I traced the wire back under the cowl and found that it is connected..?? Is this the right wire does anyone know?? I connected the ground to the battery that cranks the engine and positive for the lamp inside the tach and the grey wire to the input. any help would be appreciated. I thought this would be like a tach on a car..maybe not. thanks GREAZY

Ok it is the grey wire. The purple is a keyed hot wire. use the the purple to power the tack the grey from the engine and the most important is to make sure your ground is well connected. This should have your tack wired correctly. If that does not work have the tack checked.

Is the charging system working?  JohnnyRudes are known for the tach not working being caused by the voltage regulator.  The regulator also sends out the tach pulses.

Tach signal comes from the stator. It is passed through the rectifier/regulator on 9 amp and higher systems and out the gray wire. On 6 amp system the yellow/gray wire from the stator ties to the gray tach wire in the engine harness. Manual tilt models used a 6 amp rectifier ($60, 3 wires, red, yellow and yellow) and power tilt models used a 9 amp rectifier/regulator ($375, 5 wires, yellow, yellow, gray, black, and red). Just did a rectifier on a 1986 115hp OMC. Arcing the battery cables can/will take out most OMC rectifier/regulators.
