New member 17 Question
« on: June 03, 2009, 10:23:05 PM »
New member here about to pull the trigger on a 1985 17; she needs some TLC but has fresh power and I think I'm getting a good price.

I'm gonna have a bunch of questions as the work progresses but first job I have is to replace the deck hatch that covers the fuel tank. Some time ago it disappeared and is now just a painted piece of plywood. Would I be best off cutting a new sheet of plywood to shape and glassing it over??

Thanks for any input,

John

The seller was asking $2,000 and accepted $1200. The engine is a 2003 75hp Merc in good condition, the hull is in nice shape as is the topsides and console but the interior needs TLC. Here's the punchlist:

The access hatch to the fuel tank was replaced with plywood, I plan on replacing that right away and coating it in glass for moisture protection then repainting the entire deck a light grey. The deck is now like a maroon color that someone painted over white and is in bad shape so the fresh coat of grey will really help. The other thing is that there are some soft spots in the deck. This isn't something I'm capable of tackling at this time so I think I'll have to live with that for now. The access door to the console is a piece of plywood painted maroon so that is obviously getting replaced with something nicer right away. A couple of other things on the interior but that is about it.

The last owner painted the hull a light blue which I plan on re-doing in "Perfection" Fighting Lady Yellow.

I'll try to post some pics tomorrow, I plan on picking it up this Saturday.

Are you using Photobucket to host the images?  Is the image a .jpg file (standard from most cameras) - look at the file name of the image, does it end in .jpg?

BoniB,
Welcome.  I just joined a couple of days ago, myself, and I also have a 17.

If you are having trouble posting pictures, email them to me, and I'll post them:

That was an AWESOME deal on that boat!  That's an awesome deal for that motor, forget the free boat and trailer!

One piece of advice - If you got it so cheap because your transom is soft, DEFINITELY use SeaCast to restore it.  I've done two boats with it, now, and that stuff is awesome, and the finished product is permanent.  If you follow the simple directions, you will NEVER have another problem with your transom again.

Congrats on the new ride.  Shoot me pictures no bigger than 800x600, (I'm on dialup) and I'll post them for you.

PS - Waxing a section of your garage floor, and then laying up matt and glass was recommended on another thread.  You could put a layer of glass, add marine ply, and then cover it in glass, if you want, but the solid glass seems like a better fix to me.   Best wishes.
