Bottom Paint Removal
« on: June 05, 2009, 12:37:14 PM »
Has anyone used Insterstrip 299E?

I'm going to be using this product this weekend to remove some year or so old bottom paint that has now turned into 20 grit sand paper.

Any advice?  I'm going to do it in sections and only leave it on for 10 minutes or so and of course wear the proper protective gear.

I've never used that particular stripper, but I have used several other kinds.  My experience with stripper is that it doesn't ever really work.  It kinda maybe sometimes works in places, but when you go to remove it, it just kind of smears the paint that it halfass removed and leaves intact paint behind.

Bottom paint is easy to sand off-  just use a nice big sander w/ 80grit.

The dust is supposed to be fairly toxic from bottom paint sanding though right?

I know to wear a respirator but what about all the dust going everywhere else?

Bottom paint should be wet sanded if possible.  If not possible- you'll want to wear a full face respirator, rubber gloves, tyvek suit, the whole 9 yards.

Well I'll have to agree it's nasty stuff and definitely use a full respirator but as far as gloves and cover-alls I personally think that's a bit overkill IMHO I took a max air shop fan (big orange drum fan) with a water mister hooked to the front to knock down the particles after it left the sanded and kept moving that back as I went worked well.  The only reason I even went that far is I live on a small street with lots of kids near by.  And when you do take a break whatever gets on your hands just rinse it off.  Maybe I'm a little to (careless) when it comes to my safety but when your dumb you have to be tuff right? :thumleft:

Found a very inexpensive wet sander.

It's probably disposable but what the hell.

I'm returning the paint stripper.  Never even openned it.  Seems like the stripper is more toxic than the paint and might do more harm than good.

Have heard of the Soy Based removers and told they work really well and that you can wash them off with a pressure washer and work better than the interlux stuff..

Citristrip didn't work well at all for me.

I think I may stick with the cheap disposable wet sander from Harbour freight.  That seems like the easiest anyhow.

I have covered it before, but I wet sandblasted mine.  Look in my rebuild, there is some good detail on it there.
