Teak Questions

Not to jump in a conversation between a bunch of ccp-heads but do you guys know if the trim on a 73 19-6 is teak? I'm assuming so I really need to reburbish mine as well my father (a carpenter forever) has told me about the "new trend"  tung oil exterior version says he has went through three houses now with the stuff and he swears by it what's your opions ? Thanks for the time.

If you look in the docs section of the Photo Gallery under 196 1970s you will find some mention of teak.
Not much but some.

Told ya there was a little about teak mentioned in those brochures.

Teak cleaner, Teak brightener, Teak guard.
In that order.

Cool thank you for the advise but it looks like it has been varnished should I first sand them down? Or is that film that is still somewhat on there from the teak guard? Sorry for hi-jacking this post and thanks in advance for the help.

I can't really tell from the pics but I'd try one piece first with the cleaner and a wire brush. If it doesn't lift then yes, you'll need to sand first but...
It never hurts to try.

Sand to smooth the raised grain and remove the old varnish. The teak oil gives it a deep luster and is easy to reapply when the finish looks dull.And it smells like coconuts. You will like the results..

Nothing looks better than golden teak oil   so long as...
You have a cover for your console and never remove it and....
You like to spend just as much time sloshin' on oil as you do sunscreen. 8)

I used Cetol on my console access hatch five years ago and it looks as good now as it did when I put it on.  Of course the console is covered when the boat is not in use, but I know of nothing else that holds up that well.  In 40 years of messing around with boats, I have used all of the oils and varnishes, and Cetol is the best, IMO.

Once again, gentlemen thank you for all the input here's a few pics after the first two coats of oil now if i do decide to go with ceton instead can I apply over the top of the oil or do I have to clean again?


Kinda before and after together and I don't know why the previous owner felt like stabbing his boat?

I do have a question if anyone has removed these pieces before how the hell do you remove these two pieces?
The other side was no problem but you can not get to the screws unless you somehow take that compartment off or the whole console

So you gentlemen were right its been about a week or so and the teak is already faded pretty bad after doing exactly what was directed with teak oil  :compress:

Teak just gives up the oil too quickly.
