Brass sleeves 73 19-6
« on: January 29, 2009, 12:48:35 AM »
I have a 73 19-6 and I've reglassed the transom and removed the old brass sleeves in the "scuppers" don't know the techincal name for them but to replace I have a problem the inside of the transom will not allow me the slide the new ones in from that side trought to narrow and if I install them from the outside I'll have the bell end to the wrong side any suggestions would be appreciated

I ran into the same problem when I rebuilt the transom on my 19-6.  I want to say those "sleeves" are called thru-hulls ( I think there's a difference between "thru-hulls" and "thru-hull fittings" but I might be wrong ).  What I did:

I cut them down to a length which only allowed about a quarter inch of the "sleeve" to clear the inside of the transom.  I liberally coated the inside of the holes and the outside of the "sleeves" themselves with 5200.  Then I slid the sleeves in from the outside of the transom (with the already "beveled" ends on the outside of the transom).  Then I used a little baby ball-pein hammer to pein the inside of the sleeves while held a larger hammer against the outside of the sleeves.  Because of the small space in trough of the floor, I couldn't get them perfectly flush with the inside of the transom, but I got pretty close and filled the small gap with more 5200 and smoothed it out.  It looks nice and works great, and you'd never know the sleeves didn't sit flush on the inside unless I told you.

Good Luck.

I had a similar problem on my '68 22-2 FB. I replaced both some time ago & crimped them it place using the proper flaring tool & Boatlife. It lasted only 1 season before it began to leak. I drilled out the brass scuppers & replaced them with rigid PVC tube bedded in 5200. I cut the tubes so they would extend 1/8" on either side & filleted the joint with 5200. It has been there 5 years now without a problem.

I took all options into consideration and I would like to say thanks to all of you I ended up going the same route as Badonquasport196 It turned out nice and the old ones have been in place for 36 years and were still intact I had made the same suggestion to a few friends about pvc and other options but if the orginals lasted 35+ years hopefully the new ones will aswell I'll go that route for now once again thanks for the input the help is much appreciated
